Not really into scrapbooking, but really into Fleetwood Mac right now

And I can't tell you exactly why. Actually, that's not true. This blog post will tell you part of the reason why. Duh. Let me start by saying I was never a Fleetwood Mac fan when they were in their prime. I was 12 when Rumours came out. And it wasn't until they released The Dance that their music finally clicked for me. And then, I just grew to love their whole story. A mix of heartbreak and musical chemistry and rock and roll.

Dan got me thinking about them the other day because he'd been listening to Tusk a lot at work, and was talking about how with some young, indie bands these days, it's not unusual for them to site the Mac as an influence. He said you could put a number of songs of Rumours onto any album today, and there'd be no reason why it wouldn't work. I tend to agree.

So aside from listening to said album non-stop for the past week, I found this clip. I'd never heard this song before. But I think it's brilliant. And sad. And their voices layer together in such a genius way. It's just beautiful.

Great link - thank-you! I didn't know it and love it too... wistful ...

Lindsey Buckingham is my Steve Perry! Thanks for that clip. Man, I love FM!

Truth be told I didn't even know who Fleetwood Mac was until I had a roommate in college that loved them. So I didn't discover them until about 1997. Then they were doing their tour for the Dance, I think? Anyway, long story short - my husband and I went on our first date to a Fleetwood Mac concert and I've loved them ever since. I'm gonna go dig out my collection now and get my FM fix. Thanks, Cathy!

OMG..that was fabulous! I know those two were lovers for a while - it felt like we eavesdropping on a private conversation - maybe something they never resolved! The way they looked at each other... I loved it, thanks for sharing Cathy.

Oh my god - Lindsay Buckingham was my boyfriend all through high school and college (well - not really, but you know what I mean). If you haven't seen the Behind the Music on Fleetwood Mac you must, because it really focuses on the Stevie-Lindsay thing that is obviously still a big part of their lives. Loved it.

CZ--sorry to bug but could you post the name of the song? I hadn't heard this song before, either and from the little bit I heard, it's beautiful. Reminds me of an old boyfriend who had a mutual admiration for FM. Anyhoo, my computer would only play a minute of the video so I'd like to go to YouTube and find it so I can hear it/see it in its entirety. Thanks!! :)

*edit to my previous comment...sorry but I found it 'Say Goodbye'. All I had to do was click on the video window and I was sent to YouTube. (blushing) sorry! DOH!

quite beautiful cathy...just loved how he played and how their voices harmonized together

wow ... you're just now picking up on mac's brilliance? well, better late than never, i guess. ;o)

my hippie mom drifted quietly into the 70s, and we were all about the fleetwood mac and simon & garfunkle (funkel? i never know.) for YEARS. the bulk of my childhood is soundtracked with their music. happy to have you in the club! (oh, and tusk is freaking awesome.)

I have always loved FM. My parents had all their albums (yes, those were the days when we listened to vinyl... the skips & scratches... gotta love it!). I saw them in concert about 9 or 10 years ago for a reunion tour they did... great show!

Great clip too... thanks for sharing! :-)

Oh Lindsey Buckingham, my old man crush. I ADORE him.

The FM is awesome.

There's a great cover album that was done in 1998 or so of Rumours called Legacy. If you love the Mac...this is a must have.

DH is the biggest Stevie Nicks fan of all time. :) I love FM and their music...all amazing!

I was never really a Fleetwood Mac fan back in the day but each time I was pregnant I listened to Fleetwood Mac nonstop (and Stevie Nicks on her own) plus a little Elton John and then soon as I had each baby I'd switch over to Paul Simon for about a year. Hey, maybe you're pregnant ;)

Oh yeah, love FM. I think I was 13 or 14 when Rumours came out. Loved Rhiannon, The Chain, Go Your Own Way. Actually, love the whole album. Love Stevie Knicks'voice, and Lindsey Buckingham. He is an awesome guitar player. If you ever watch him really close, you'll see he plays the guitar without picks. Not sure how he does that for hours during a concert, but his sound is fantastic.

Thanks for the memories. I'm digging out my FM CD's!

Patty

Goosebumps! Did you see how they looked at each other??? This was beautiful.. I've never heard this...love that it's acoustic...Running right now to iTunes for a download version!
ps...he is MY kind of guy!

Cathy, I've always loved their song Landslide.

Have you heard Smashing Pumpkins cover of Landslide??! I love it. You must check it out.

I never really was a big FM fan years ago, but I loved Stevie Nicks. However lately, I have been discovering FM and I just added Rumours to my Blackberry today, how weird!

Here's another brilliant example of Lindsey Buckingham's finger picking style off that same album - I forced this song on my friends for months:

*Yes, I am a male reader of this blog. No, my wife doesn't need to know I read her favorite scrapbooking blogs.

i'm a huge Fleetwood Fan and saw them live when they came to Aus a few years ago and it was the most awesome show
A few years ago a friend put me onto buckingham nicks - i would so love to get a proper copy of this album
http://www.buckinghamnicks.net/

PS - do a search on you-tube and there are a few of their songs up there
awesome

Yeah there's a great tribute album that has covers by the likes of Jewel and artists of her generation. I LOVE the cover by Duncan Sheik of "Little Bird"

Totally love Fleetwood Mac! Rumors was the first cassette I ever got! good stuff...

On a side note - read the description of your class at 4EXPERTS. My scrappin-addict-friend and I are in need of a class that requires no-new-purchases! We are both self-proclaimed 'paper-hoars' - love the stuff and can't stop buying. Looking forward to it in the fall!

Lindsey is THE MAN on guitar. Seen him (And Mac) a number of times live and he never fails to impress. Seriously. And I was JUST talking about Fleetwood Mac with one of my clients yesterday. I specifically mentioned "Tusk," because one of his new songs reminds me a lot of that song. And dude, "Rumors" in surround sound will BLOW. YOUR. MIND. When you come visit me someday (you know, when you come to see Neil in NYC), you will have to hear it in that setting. And I had "Rumours" on 8-track!!!!

P.S. NOT a Stevie fan AT ALL.

oh, man...i REALLY wanted them to kiss at the end...and now I gotta go dig up that song about rolling over in the grave...

As we say down here in the South, "He shore can pick that guitar"

Fleetwood Mac, Lord, I put some wear on that album in college (we called them albums back in the day)!

Great song and he's rather dishy I think:)

Michelle

Cathy, look up "Buckingham Nicks" - before Fleetwood Mac was even a twinkle in someone's eye, Lindsay and Stevie made a now out-of-print album. I had a tape of a tape in college and believe it or not, it BLOWS old Fleetwood away - truly a FM lover's album.

CZ,
I LOVE how you manage to keep me walkin' down memory lane with the music selections. DH keeps asking "Why did you download THAT?" I hate to admit "because i read about it on Cathy's blog " but my iTunes account is getting a fair workout thanks to you.

Keep up the nostalgia... luvit!

It's Thursday and I am on the east coast and I am currently watching LOST!!!!

Hope you are too!

Love that song - it's on their "Say You Will" album from 2003 as well. I really enjoyed that album - after I listened a few times, I grew to like every song, and there are several I can't get enough of - including this one and "Bleed to Love Her" (an all time fave) from The Dance.

Lovely choice - I am going to have to break out my "The Dance" DVD and watch again! (The Dance CD was the first gift my husband, then boyfriend, ever gave me.) :)

Oh, yeah...I remember Fleetwood Mac. Very cool. Thanks for the beautiful song Cathy!

Wow! Besides how awesome FM is, can you even STAND the way he kept looking at Stevie!? I can't find a word to describe the way he was looking into/at/for/wanting her. That alone was blowing my mind. And now I will quote my favorite pirate, "You're not making any sense, mate!"

Break my heart.

hey..it's not fleetwood mac but it's still pretty darn funny
have you seen this?

Fleetwood Mac trivia... did you know the Spirit of Troy (aka the USC Marching Band) is the only college band ever to perform on a double platinum album... The song? TUSK... It's played in the 3rd quarter of every USC football game (it has alternate words impuning the talents of the cross-town rivals)

Fight On!

BBC2 in the UK recently did a classic album series and Rumours was one. Id forgotten just how superb the whole thing was. Hasn't really aged. Sign of a classic.I first heard it when I was 14 and its still one I go back too. Love Stevie's vocals, love Lindsay's guitars. And Christine wasn't half bad either!

Wow, that was soooo sweet! He looked at her just like an sad, old, lover......and they were! I loved it! Thank you so much.

A not an, geeesh, I couldn't see what I was typing because I had tears in my eyes. I was really touched!

Love them! And, like kids whose parents have split up, I am always secretly hoping that Lindsey and Stevie will be together again, someday.

Yayy! Fleetwood Mac was my very first concert back in 10th grade! Though Stevie Nicks did this scary witchy dance to start it off...SCARRRRYYYY! But Tusk...with the USC marching band...don't even get me started! YEAH!

Hi,

I was also a Fleetwood Mac fan back in "their" day. I played their music so much in the 70's that my now 35 yr old daughter became a huge fan of Stevie. She had her highschool senior portfolio taken in Stevie like outfits. And she's attended quite a few concerts over the years too of either Stevies or of Fleetwood Macs. I managed to purchase her a few items from her Arizona store that her grandmother or mom ran once upon a time. She treasures those things.
And I also got her the album that has Stevie and Lyndsie naked...something she wasn't really proud of - but a nice collectors item to own just the same - it was all part of her coming of age.
I think the music is timeless.
Glad you discovered them and enjoy the music.

You were 12 when rumors came out... ok, now I feel old :(
thanks!
mary

I was six when Rumours came out; it was the first album I ever bought. My grandparents came to visit and took us shopping, as grandparents are wont to do, and I wanted nothing more than to buy Rumours. It totally holds up over all this time.

My favorite part of that concert video that the video you posted came from is the moment where we see Courtney Love in the audience just screaming because she loves Stevie Nicks that much. It's kind of awesome.

i own the dvd and the cd. seeing lindsey playing big love might come close to how you feel about neil--i never tire of listening or watching that. i went and saw stevie last year and she was kick butt awesome!

I can't stop listening...it is beautiful! And I do feel like I'm somehow eavesdropping. I looked it up on iTunes...but this live version is so much better (which iTunes does not have)...much more intimate. Thank you for sharing.

The chemistry between those two is just so amazing. There's definitely unfinished business there.

Definitely find yourself some "Buckingham Nicks" and listen to "Long Distance Winner" - you will not regret it. The song gives me chills. Go. Run. Now. Download.

Re: Scrapbooking--
It is the winter of de-mojofication, I'm convinced.
