spelling with flickr
So I was reading Scrapbook Play (a recent Simple Scrapbooks special issue) and came across a layout by Elizabeth Dillow (whose new book, The Scrapbookers Almanac, is the object of my intense adoration lately)… and the layout had a title on it generated by using this cool Spell With Flickr thing Have you seen it?
If not, by all means, you should.
I'm not doing the Flickr thing yet, because honestly, I don't really understand what it is. And, part of me has a hard time with supposedly clever, alternate spellings of words. You know, words like 'sportz' and 'kewl' and 'taxsez'. Come to think of it, this is also why i have a hard time really appreciating the genius that is LOL Cats (although find LOL Thom one of the funniest things of the latter part of 2007. Side note: Thom can't afford a dentist because Radiohead was too busy letting you decide how much money they should make on their record.)
Why couldn't they just call it Flicker? Was the letter 'e' just super hard to come by that day?
It's a good question. Discuss.

Perhaps it's because you have to buy the vowels and they didn't have another $250 after purchasing the I. Just a thought.

Maybe they are just like the rest of the 'younger', general, hip population and have given up on spelling anything and everything in its correct and proper form! I, for one, cannot even bother to learn how to abbreviate words when sending an e-mail or text message. It just makes more sense to spell it out so that people know what you are talking about and there is no room for error. It seems to me that the older I get, the less I really want to learn about the newer technology that is coming out faster every day. Or...maybe it's what Susanne said!!

Yes! I love this application...can't remember where I heard about it but I used it for my blog banner even.
Have you seen the visual dictionary? Similar idea but with whole words. Very cool.

And I'm with you on creative spelling. I come from "kountry kousin" country. Please tell me... *why* the letter change?

I just heard this Kansas song (Carry on wayward son) on the KQRS A-Z last month, and I went to the Kansas Youtube video simply because I thought you were wrong on those lyrics. Whoops, my bad. Thanks for clearing that up for me. :)

Oh Cathy, I love love love you. Please don't take this the wrong way....I could ignore it in one post, but now it's two in a row.
Whose.
not who's. (when in doubt, say it out. for example, who's=who is)
Cathy, whose blog makes me so happy every day. I think she rocks.

Hi Cathy-"intense adoration" that's what I would call it too! I just bought the Scrapbookers Almanac about a week ago and have already picked out layouts to make my own..Happy New Year..
ps: Flickr..whats that? :)

2 weeks from my due date...and i just peed my pants. love it...i don't get the "e" thing either...really annoying @ this stage of pregnancy as is everything else. =0)

I totally agree with you on the whole Flickr thing. It is well known in my family my pet peeve regarding things like this.....ESPECIALLY, substituting k's for c's (i.e. Krispy Kreme, Kritter Haven Dog Spa, Koffee Kitchen....you get the idea). My kids take great pleasure in pointing signs like these out for me. Drives me totally insane and it's so comforting to know I have company in my dementia.

Scoot over, I'm joining you on that bus...I second Kris' nomination of peeves, and I'd like to add the one that tops my list: "Kwiky Copies" K's for Q's?
To avoid meltdown, I told myself that they were from other countries and were living the American dream sans dictionary.
Close second to missing vowels and letter seat fillers, the woman on the treadmill who sounded like a herd of Salvation Army bell ringers as she failed to take her "bling" off and jingled all the way.

Actually, I heard that when they were getting started, the flicker.com domain was taken. So they went with flickr.
I can't verify that or back it up at all, but I could swear I read that somewhere a while back.

Yeah...I don't understand Flickr either.

Nicole (Little Lovelies Handmade) listed you in her blog...that's where I came from...
Anyhow...LOL! You had me laughing, I'm with you...why, why, why on earth leave out the "e" Flickr? Why? Do you know how many times I've gone to Flicker??? How many times? LOL And, the little words like, "kewl", and all... I can't get those either! All that said, I love Flickr and enjoy all the inspiring pictures everyone posts! Thanks for the laugh today!

Oh no! You have touched upon my pet peeve. It's good that I don't delve too deeply into this for fear of griping away hours of my life. How about Toys R Us? Let's teach the children to spell wrong. I truly think they minus the A and E, because two additional letters on an exterior sign costs a bit more and when you multiply that by the amount of stores they have and let's not forget about their sister store, Kids R Us. It's all about the finances - I am sure. LOL! I truly am not this anal. OR am I?

Hey Cathy, I am a daily readr of your blog...the flickr guys are great spellrs what are you talkin about? Thanks for the laughtr your blog brings!
Posted by: annie | January 03, 2008 at 02:14 AM
Because flicker.com was already gone, and you remember the whole thing more readily because of the 'misspelling'.
Posted by: Relly | January 03, 2008 at 05:50 AM
Cathy - totally off topic. I know you don't often do a Q&A kind of thing. But I wish you would in this case. At least for me. I would love any information on that A to Z class you did a while back. I would like to do something like that this year. Was it something you offered at BPS? If you did is it still available? Thanks ....
And not because I am hoping you answer my question I do think you totally rock. But I have told you that before and it is still true. I check your blog everyday ...

Hi Cathy, Flickr is an awesome tool to use for your photos and creating new things with some of the gadgets out there - like the spell with flickr.
I never heard of LOL Thom, but am going to check it out, thanks for the first laugh of the day!

I love the creation you made with the flickr letters.
Posted by: Laura T. | January 03, 2008 at 08:33 AM
Love the responses! One of my pet peeves also - it's almost as if a person thinks they are 'kewl' just because they spell it in an annoyingly quirky way. Think back people to when your parents used the words 'groovy' and 'far out'. Same thing........

Kewl is not cool. Neither is using Ks in the place of Qs or Cs. Blech.
I do, however, love Flickr, even minus the E.

I have Elizabeth's book, too and love it!
I plan on doing at least one idea per month this year to jumpstart my scrapping again :0)
Posted by: Mary Jo | January 03, 2008 at 12:52 PM
now cathy, as a scrapbooker, you should know that you can never find a freakin E to save your life!

I've wondered about the flickr thing too. No good insights though.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it was just a cute marketing gimmick, and because they didn't want to pay $$$ out the $^&$!% to buy the flicker domain name. ;-) What bugs me more about modern advertising/branding is the total lack of grammar knowledge! Who else here can't stand false possessives?!?!
I had no idea what it was either up until about 6 months ago, and now I'm totally addicted (it goes hand-in-hand with my increased addiction to photography). Really, simply, its a way to share your photos online with a gigantic community of people all over the world. That's one of the things I really love about it - it's not one of those completely American-centered sites, but caters to a ton of different languages. I'll browse other people's photos endlessly - it's such great inspiration! It really has the Apple-ideology, about making things as simple as possible while still being on the cutting edge of technology.

I put a LOLdinejad (yeah, the Iranian president) on my blog a while ago. I think it's time for another one.
Thanks for the LOL Thom! Jim thanks you too, even though he hasn't technically seen it yet.
