gettin' jiggy with it
So one of the cool things I learned at Donna's event was how to do a tape transfer, courtesy of the super cool Stephanie McAtee. (Yes, I realize I might be the last one standing in the Have Never Tried Tape Transfer room, but what can I say? I cling to the tried and true with a vice-like grip.)
Does everyone know how to do this? Am I the last one? Really? You just put packing tape over a laser-printed image, submerge in water, and rub off the paper? Really? I'm that behind?
And after seeing how Ali incorporated some of the work from the various classes at Inspired, I decided to do the same, because I'm "lemming" like that. I'm going to work on it over the weekend, filling up my acrylic album from cute Tena's class. And playing more with pencil crayons, now that I officially adore Kal Barteski, who showed me how fun they are.
And speaking of Kal, her artwork is absolutely amazing, and I have to show you an illlustration she did that got me majorly verklempt. It's this piece. It absolutely nails what so many of us don't see, myself included, when we look in a mirror. I bought a signed print and I plan to gaze on it daily and work on giving myself more of a break.
When art gets you in the gut, I think it's pure magic. Kal, you are conveyor belt of magic.
And with that, I'm off for a super highly productive day of creating design comps for the so-new-I-can't-even-link-it upcoming Simple special issue, tentatively titled "Mini Albums You Can Make in an Evening," and then I look forward to a weekend full of tape transferring anything in my house that moves.
Love,
Cathy
p.s. Those stamps are by Fontwerks. And the rad photo on the transfer by Tara, who makes me look good.

I can't say I've ever done a tape transfer either - not even sure how it's done. It looks COOL though! Where can I find the instructions?

How frickin cool is that!!!!! I must be the only other person that has never done the tape transfer. I tried printing on regular paper twice... uh, no, that doesn't work. Then on my 3rd try I printed on photo paper & voila!!! SO COOL!! :-)
Thanks for the tip, I love it!

Nope not last-because I don't know what tape transfer is??? You got to meet Ms Kai-wow-I have been hooked on her stuff for about 6 mos. Her energy and attitude towards life blow me away.

Grand morning to ya! Don't feel alone. I have heard of tape transfer and wanted to attempt it, but have never had the chance. Damn, I am so sad that I was unable to attend inspired(this will lead me to a lot of begging Donna to include at least one more person next year).
Thank you so much for all the great laughs on a regular basis. You are a great reminder for me to always look for the comical in life. On a similar note...thanks for the great links today. Those gals are awesome and the art from Kal made me tear up too. MUST get print!!!!! What a beautiful reminder.

I've never even heard of tape transfer so you are not alone! LOL
Posted by: Heidi | April 18, 2008 at 10:35 AM
Honey, I've never even heard of a tape transfer, let alone tried it. You're so ahead of the curve :) Now for a REALLY dumb question... are pencil crayons differnet than colored pencils? And if they are, can you please tell us all about them? And about everything you learned... because if you haven't done it before, odds are I haven't either! :)

I did the tape transfer thing once. Wasn't a huge fan.
I love that piece that your bought. It speaks my name!!
Posted by: sue Treiber | April 18, 2008 at 10:39 AM
I've never "tape transfered" anything, but I'm game for anything once. I'll go seek some cool art to snag off the internets and put into a layout.
Posted by: Nevis | April 18, 2008 at 11:03 AM
Inspired was my first tape transfer too.
I also bought that print from Kal. I'm going to hang it in my cube at work and read it at least once a day. Every woman needs one!

Hi Cathy...LOVE this piece from you (it is a rockin' hot photo from Ms Tara, who is also rockin' hot coolness. Like you.) Please share more of your work from the BIG EVENT!
I am the one who stopped you in the hall outside the coffe shop on the morning of the last classes at Inspired and GUSHED like a tween at a David Cassidy appearance....(don't laugh...he was too HOT! was too! was!)...thanks for taking the time to chat and the hugs (and then the photos at lunch!) You were so kind and patient with all us groupies--like the ROCKSTAR YOU ARE!
(PS Stephanie's class was my first attempt at tape transfer, too...tho I knew what it was....just never tried it. So no...you are certainly not THAT out of the groove!)
Gush Gush. we love you.

hi Cathy! I know what tape transfer is and have never tried it although I really would like to. Guess I just have to DO IT! I really like the piece you posted- I know it is out of your comfort zone (atleast from what I have seen)and it came out great! What did medium did you use to stamp the letters? They came out really nice, especially considering they are on cardboard that is not really flat. Also, how did you outline the letters so perfectly? now that is the Cathy I "know"! I hereby pledge to do a photo transfer. you have officially inspired me. I will raise my margartia glass to you this evening for fun friday! I hope your weekend is great!!:-)

Cathy I begged Kal to sell the original...hummm not yet... I "settled" for a print awhile ago but I have to tell you that even at 52 it still evokes so much emotion! I love her Love Life book too... wasn't it just the best event ever???? We (group A) had Donna, so you'll have to share the tape transfer thing...( I'm NOT complaining about having Donna!!!)... Happy Day & I promise,no more Ria Pictures!!!!

Well hell, apparently I am that behind too. I have never even heard of this. Sounds really cool. Guess my next purchase will be a laser printer. I have the old dinosaur ink jet type. Looks like a lot of fun. Cant wait to see what you create. Have a great weekend Cathy! ~Janna

Well count me in on the never done tape transfer group. I've heard of it and it looks so cool but I am sure I would mess it up.
See look you've moved past a bunch of us. You are just to cool and hip that way!
Thanks for sharing it is awesome.

Haven't done a tape transfer. I don't like to get too wet! I've done terpenoid transfers though! Not as messy!

Between you, Kal and Ali, I'm inspired. Can't wait to get home so I begin playing. Those Prisma pencil crayons are the greatest. :)

Please, please, please- if you do a clear acrylic album, would you share some of the process? I know your style, I'm similar, and I'm having a hard time "loosening up" with the acrylic. Thanks for considering this desperate plea!

Never heard of a tape transfer until your post, but now I am eager to try it!! Sounds cool! Jessica

great - now that's what I want to see. I'm so glad you girls are posting some of these gorgeous projects from inspired. I regret that I was unable to go and this is just so much fun to see.
I too, haven't done tape transfer, but will definately be giving it a go now.
Posted by: Molly | April 18, 2008 at 08:08 PM
whew - good to know I'm in good company when it comes to trying the tape thingy - cool trick! I will be giving it a shot soon, although, I'm wondering if there's a big learning curve, since I seem to have issues picking things up lately.

1. My sister Jen and I were also quite fascinated with the tape transfers - I've been clipping stuff out of magazines ever since & I've got a big box of cool phrases from magazines that I'm going to do that with & then do some scrapbooking old school - like I did in the 80s. Plus I might do an auction album for my 20th reunion from high school using this technique. 2. I also love Kal & her class & next to you - she made me cry at Inspired (yep, I'm like the water works). and 3. We watched I Am Legend tonight with the Gettin Jiggy Wit It man himself - Will Smith, I usually go for funny but this was pretty good edge of your seat type stuff. :)

and 4. I think you should call the new special issue Microwavable Mini Albums (ok its late, but kinda like tv dinners for scrapbooking - do them in one night quick & easy). ok night night.

I'm so gutted to miss events like these - living in the UK I have little chance of EVER attending something this fabulous. Keep your projects coming, Cathy. I need to live vicariously through you!
And Katie - fab name for the special issue :) Although Simple might get in trouble if people take it literally and start microwaving mini books in the wee hours of the morning. Kaboom!

I was in the group that missed that class, so it looks like I'm even further behind the times than you ... I've got to try this ... what a fun effect. Kal ... conveyor belt of magic ... love that ... so true ... she is amazing.

i remember seeing ths technique in faye morrow bell's book. i love that book! glad to see this technique is still being used today.
Posted by: stephanie | April 19, 2008 at 10:29 PM
cathy... i haven't tried it either. is it really that easy? print a laser pic, stick tape over it (packing tape?), and put in water and peel off paper? then the pic is left on the tape? is that really all there is too it? i thought it was so much harder... huh.

First time for transfers, of any kind, for me also!! Lots of new ideas for me, Kal made me feel like, gasp, an artist!!! LOL
Hope you like the label makers. Let me know if you need anything else or if you have questions!
Posted by: Virginia | April 20, 2008 at 03:41 PM
I've never done tape transfer. Echoing others here.. could you do a step by step? And maybe show what kind of packing tape (I know.. but we may have different kinds here) you use for this?
I'll even pay in Tim Tams! :D
