New product releases + the 1st Quarter Sale & freebie

This weekend, the Designer Digitals 1st Quarter Sale is in full swing and I have a few new products in the store.

CZ_CappedCards01PREV

Capped Cards No. 01—These are layered 6 x 4 templates with a big chunky title plopped right in the middle. I love that look you see in videos a lot, where the type flashes over the image, large and centered, so I figured I'd do the same for some photo cards. You can play with the opacity of the type to create a screened back effect. It's just some good Helvetica Neue goodness. (Love that font!)

CZ_LayeredTNo122PREV

Layered Template No. 122—The idea behind this template was to have a slot (lower left) that was sized perfectly for any 3 x 4 digital card file. Then, you can build a layout around a favorite Project Life card.

CZ_MinimalAlphaCirclesPREV

Minimal Alpha Circles—A simple set designed to match my Life Basics Minimals templates.

CZ_SansPlusScriptsNo01PREV

Sans Plus Scripts No. 01—a simple set of word art designed to use any way you like, combining a bold, condensed sans serif with cool script.

But the best part about a sale, besides saving money? Free stuff!

New product releases

Just a few things this weekend in the store, first up, Right Now Cards Brushes and Stamps No. 01.

CZ_RightNowCardsNo01PREV

This set comes as PNG and ABR. The images come in black only but you can break them up to create multi colored elements, as I have done in the above sample.

PHOTOSHOP QUICK TIP | EDIT PNGS TO CHANGE ELEMENT COLORS Open any PNG file. Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to make a selection around the element you'd like to change. Once you have the selection, go to Layer > New > Layer Via Cut and it will place it onto a new layer. Change the color as you like via Edit > Fill Layer. Don't forget to make sure Preserve Transparency is checked.

Also, a new set of calendar cards, these ones featuring a Monday week start.

Introducing the One Days of Giveaways! A new CZ Design holiday tradition (at least for this year)

1dayslogo

I always wished I had a ginormous operating budget for my blog to do an awesomely huge holiday giveaway as a way to say thank you for reading my blog.

You know, think Oprah's Favorite Things, but CZ Design-style. On Day One, you'd win an orange sweatshirt. On Day Two, you'd win three sessions with Joe, my physical therapist. On Day Three, a blue raspberry ICEE. And on Day Four, a new car!

But right now I only have the means for a One Days of Giveaways™ (just kidding, it's not trademarked), and I think it's pretty awesome.

Today, I have three copies of the brand spankin' new Photoshop Elements 12 for three of you. It's so new that I don't even have a copy yet. But of course, no copy of Photoshop Elements would be as much fun without digital goodies to play with, so each of the three winners will get their choice of any 10 of my products (no limits on what you choose).

Give

TO ENTER: Just tell me what you are most looking forward to this month. That's the first way to enter.

A second way to enter? If you haven't already, please Like my Facebook page, come back here, post a comment and tell me that it is so.

A third way to enter? Follow me on Twitter, come back here and again, leave me a comment and tell me that it is so.

A fourth way to enter? If you already follow me on Twitter and Facebook, leave me a comment and tell me, "Um, Hello? Been doing that for, like, ever!"

This gives people a chance to enter multiple times.

This giveaway will stay open until Thursday night, and I'll post the winners on Friday.

Thank you for reading my blog. I genuinely appreciate your comments and your visits. I'm really going to work to make 2014 more fun, more real and more informative. And always, as crap free as possible.

This giveaway is now closed. Check back on Friday morning to see if you're a winner.

A simple holiday project that even I was able to make

Simpleholidayproject

I was watching the Big Picture Pajama Party last week and Stacy Julian shared the cutest and simplest idea: cover a can of hot cocoa with holiday paper and keep a stash handy for quick last-minute or hostess gift ideas.

I thought: I can do this.

So I decided to create a custom lid label as part of the project. I posted a photo on Instagram and a few people said, "Can you show us how you did it?

Can I?

Today I have a video tutorial that walks you through using Photoshop Elements and the Silhouette software to design, print and cut out a custom label. The reason I love this is that I don't have a circle cutting system. I can only go up to 2.5 inches (the largest jumbo punch I own) and when I realized, "Hey! I can use my Silhouette for this!" I decided to get down to the business of making adorable holiday gifts.

One note of interest: my head shows up in the second half of the video. Frequently.

It appears I have much to learn about shooting from above, but I will tell you this: I milk it for all its worth.

This project involves zero glitter and is a fun way to add a little digital hybrid to your holiday crafting.

And, you know, hot cocoa.

Holiday Project: Customize a Can of Hot Cocoa from Cathy Zielske on Vimeo.

Note: I added a vintage shaped tag to my can and tied it on with some twine. The Silhouette store has tons of different labels to choose from. I chose one and just added some text inside the shape and did the Print & Cut process. I can see how money could quickly start going right down the Silhouette drain.

But really, can you put a price on cute?

Okay, I know the answer to that, but let's just pretend together.

Thank you, and thanks to Stacy Julian for making me tap into my inner crafty girl.

GREAT VIDEO ON PRINT AND CUT: I watched this video last week to figure out how to do a Print & Cut. It may be helpful and there are no heads that appear and get in the way.

SUPPLIES:

Note: any sheet of 12 x 12 paper will work for this project. My sheet was so old there are no modern-day links available!

Boo! + a free Silhouette cut file for you

Boo

October is in full swing at Chez Zielske, and you know what that means: the bee costume has come down from the attic.

My daughter asked me the other day, "So when are you going to start wearing it?"

I should state for the record, I only wear it on Halloween. I wake up. I shower. I put it on.

And once its on, I feel ridiculously happy all day long. I invent errands to run because I like the idea of a bee grocery shopping. I like the idea of a bee filling up her gas tank. I like the idea of someone glancing over in traffic and seeing my antennae.

I also like that no matter what size my stomach is, it just doesn't matter. The bee costume always fits. Therein lies the real allure.

In other news, I recently unboxed my Silhouette Cameo and after a few false starts (and much  help from my Facebook community!) I managed to create my Bat Wall.

Batwall

Oh for cute spooky!

And although I have a lot to learn about this amazing new tool, if you'd like to make your own bat wall, by all means, please download my cut file:

Download Czbat

Although I had success with my bats, I decided to take one Facebook friend's advice and sign up for one of Kerri Bradford's Silhouette classes, specificially this one: Getting to Know You. I am loving it! I've known and admired Kerri and her work for years, but she's a really gifted teacher. I told her it feels like she's the Wizard of Silhouette and she's letting me see behind the curtain.

Plus, I really want to know what I can do with this thing. If you have one and want to expand your horizons, seriously check out Kerri Bradford Studio. I'm soaking up all that I can.

Cards

In other news… many of you have signed up for my Picas + Points newsletter (thank you!) and I'm working on the next issue which is slated to blast out at the end of the week. These spooky little 3 x 4 printables will be an exclusive newsletter freebie, downloadable only for newsletter subscribers. Also included? 8.5 x 11 matching prints, which might look just dandy as part of your Halloween decor.

Printable

If you haven't done so, please sign up today by clicking here. My newsletter motto is "100% Crap Free" and so far, with one newsletter already under my belt, I feel it's safe to say that I've kept that promise.

I'm using the newsletter to share upcoming event news, favorite font shares, freebies such as the ones pictured above and anything else design or scrapbook-related that I feel compelled to send to your in box.

I'd love to have you as a subscriber.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to figure out a few more holiday touches, like this one:

Cool

Special thanks to my family, who although they will admit I'm getting a little out of hand, seem to love me all the same.

Halloween... holla! (can middle-aged women say that?)

Hallo

The Halloween decorating has begun! (Wreath courtesy of Target and spiders hot glue gunned on, courtesy of me.)

Last night, Aidan and I hit Michael's. I'm still a little fuzzy on what happened. There was a lot of limping and I came home with cheesecloth, spray paint, spray adhesive, and… wait for it—GLITTER!

My first weekend project is this bad boy:

Screen Shot 2013-09-26 at 9.38.54 AM

Next, I will be breaking out my still-in-the-box Silhouette Cameo to make several black bats to adorn my walls. Wish me luck. It's a whole new era of crafting for this simple scrapbooker.

And last but not least, I will be painting and glittering a letter 'Z'. I am afraid, but I'll try and post reports from the field. I can do this.

I cannot think of glitter without thinking of two things: 1) how much it scares me and 2) this clip from Dmitri Martin, which contains the greatest truth in the history of crafting about glitter at 2:30.

I wanted to thank everyone who posted ideas last week and shared their Pinterest boards with me.

Halloween is in the house. Yo.
